I love Take Back the Night. I love that I start off terrified of speaking, of sharing my past as a survivor of domestic violence and sexual assault. I love that, as soon as I do, I instantly feel stronger. I love that my voice can empower other men to share, to join in, to heal. Both at Harvard and Vanderbilt, I have noticed men in the crowd who seem to not realize they can speak out; they appear to feel relegated to a silent minority at what has been deemed a “women’s event.”  So I make a point of sharing my background, of telling them that sexual assault and violence against women is not a marginal issue, does not belong to just one gender or just one community.  It’s something we all share, it’s something that affects us all, and men can stand up, speak out, and become a part of the process that addresses these evils. I’m proud that my voice has affected others, has empowered men to share their stories, has brought forth the healing in friends, strangers, and coworkers alike.  It’s difficult to say those words each year.  I find it rather trying to speak up in front of the entire group about being a survivor, but when I think about the stories I’ve heard after, I can’t help but feel as if I did some good by opening the door for those other men to share. In the end, that room of friends and strangers becomes a space of comfort for me, and I’m so thankful for it every year.

In honor of Schoonover Observatory’s 50th anniversary this year, the Lima Astronomical Society is planning a three-day celebration on Sept. 12, 13 and 14.

On the evening of Sept. 12, the original founder of the Lima Astronomical Society — Herb Doughty — will return to Lima from his home in California to speak on a variety of subjects. On Sept. 13, an open house will be held at the observatory starting at 1:30 p.m., including a re-dedication of the observatory, remarks by current members and more. September 13 will also feature a black-and-white film about the history of the observatory, including remarks by current and past members, at the Elks Lodge on North Street in Lima. Wrapping up the anniversary celebration, members of the astronomical society will meet up Sept. 14 with a breakfast saying farewell to Doughty.

Recent, highly publicized cases of police using deadly force against people of color, including the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo. on Aug. 9,  underscore the need for the social work profession to call for reforms in the nation’s law enforcement systems.

This issue is important for the profession, which has a long history of working to end all vestiges of institutional racism and racial disparities, including in law enforcement.

Take note, USA. We are doing something wrong. Police brutality, excessive force, and abuse of power MUST stop. How can we trust those who are employed to protect and serve, when the people fear them-with good reason. Wake up, America! The violence must end.
